These are my notes and observations taken from a teaching by Pastor Mark Driscoll, teaching pastor at Mars Hill Church in Seattle (No connection to Rob Bell’s Mars Hill Church) put into somewhat of a readable format. I tried to capture the essence of what he was getting at and in all reality come no where even close. It certainly did however cause me to think.

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in and out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life isn't always fair and maybe it was my fault.

By Robin Sharma 1 Sleep less. This is one of the best investments you can make to make your life more productive and rewarding. Most people do not need more than 6 hours to maintain an excellent state of health. Try getting up one hour earlier for 3-4 weeks and it will develop into a powerful habit. Remember, it is the quality not the quantity of sleep that is important. And just imagine having an extra 30 hours a month... read more
A lot of emotion, uncertainty and confusion have flooded me over the past few days. I’ve slipped a bit in my “new habits” and now I find myself asking a lot of questions. Not so much why did this happen to me but why am I still here when I see so many others taken out completely by this. I lost a very good friend of mine a few months back from a massive heart attack; he was 43 and in much better shape then myself. He left behind 2 kids and a wife. His wife has been very supportive to bot...

I go back to work on Monday after being off since Aug. 3rd. I’ve spoken with them a couple of times about the things that the Doctors are allowing and not allowing me to do. So far they have been great. I’ve noticed something that although I knew existed before, didn’t hold the same level of concern in my mind that it does now. Stress. Although I’ve got to learn to better deal with stress, I’ve also got to eliminate as much of it as possible in my life. If I am feeling stress just by sp...

In my case it wasn't hard for me to do the right thing; it just wasn't top of mind. I knew everything I was doing was not healthy but it didn't matter because I was invincible and time was on my side. Or at least I thought so. I start Cardiac Rehab on Monday the 21st and in the meantime I am only allowed 10 minutes of moderate exercise a day, adding 1 minute every day. I am currently up to 15 minutes. Exercise currently only entails brief walks around the block and a couple times up and down ...

My new friends in Cardiac Rehab at Mercy Medical in Des Moines tell me that at this point it is all up to me. “We’ve done our jobs, what happens now is up to you?” Of course it always was up to me. Phillip Morris didn’t force me to smoke, McDonalds didn’t force double cheeseburgers down my throat, and La-Z-Boy didn’t tie me down to their recliners while I should have been outside pursuing other activities. I was where I was because of the decisions that I made. Truth be told I always kne...

The philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer once observed: “most people take the limits of their vision to be the limits of the world. A few do not. Join them.” Profound point. The life you see this very moment isn't necessarily the life of your future. You might be viewing things through the eyes of your fears, limitations and false assumptions. Once you clean up the stained glass window you see the world through, guess what? A whole new set of ... read more
As bad as it gets, there is always someone elsewhere whose problems make yours seem minimal. I bought my daughter a car for her 16th birthday, paid cash for it, darn near every penny we had. She was so happy and we were happy that we could do it for her. 5 hours later she totaled it. Being that it was paid for I only took out liability so we are out the money. I’ve never lost so much money in so little time. Fortunately she was ok and the man she hit was also ok. So I’m feeling sorry f...

1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay them.

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down. (Keep this in mind if you are one of those grouches) 3. Keep learning: Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain get idle. "An idle mind is the devil's workshop." And the devil's name is Alzheimer's! 4. Enjoy the simple things. 5. Laugh often, lo... read more

SpongeBob SquarePants is my hero. The kids and I were having breakfast this morning when Bianca brought up the subject of this crazy little cartoon character. “Daddy, is Spongebob a real person?” Made me laugh. Then it made me think. If SpongeBob was a human being, this world would be a better place. Seriously. Here are 4 lessons SpongeBob can teach us to get more joy from life: #1. Be the Eternal Optimist. The guy (the sponge I should... read more

Nor lose yourself in the future. For the past no longer exists, And the future is not yet here. By looking deeply at things just as they are, In this moment, here and now, The seeker lives calmly and freely. You should be attentive today, For waiting until tomorrow is too late. Death can come and take us by surprise-- How can we gainsay it? The one who knows How to live attentively Night and day Is the one who knows The best way to be independent. -... read more
I'm at Half Time. Assuming I live until I'm 80 (and that's a big assumption because I've learned that the only thing you can expect in life is the unexpected), I'm half way home...half way through the adventure I call my life. I've become more philosophical these days. I'm less willing to waste my time. Less willing to listen to negative people. Less willing to miss an opportunity to be loving, champion another human being or have some fun. I've also started reading obituaries.
